Samaná is a coastal municipality in Samaná Province that stretches across a landscape featuring a small coastal plain. The Sierra de Samaná mountains frame this territory, creating a distinctive geography of highlands and shoreline.
The region was founded in 1756 by families from the Canary Islands under Francisco Rubio y Peñaranda as Santa Bárbara de Samaná. This Spanish settlement marked an important step in the colonization of the peninsula.
The Samaná Americans, descendants of African immigrants who arrived in 1824, shape local life with their traditions and language. Visitors can experience this heritage through the communities and the everyday culture of the region.
The area is served by two airports: Samaná El Catey International and Arroyo Barril. These transportation hubs make it easy for both domestic and international visitors to arrive.
From January to March, humpback whales use Samaná Bay as a nursery ground, making the area a world-renowned whale-watching destination. This seasonal migration attracts visitors who come to observe these marine mammals in their natural habitat.
