Monte Cristi Province, Administrative province in northwestern Dominican Republic

Monte Cristi Province is an administrative division located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic in its northwestern region. The territory contains flat plains and rolling hills, with the Yaque del Norte river flowing through it—the largest waterway in the country.

Spanish authorities established this province in 1506, and settler families from the Canary Islands arrived in 1533 to build communities and develop the land. These early waves of settlement created the foundations for the region's growth.

The province celebrates the feast of Saint Ferdinand each May with religious processions, sports events, and traditional dances that draw the community together. These annual festivities reveal how deeply local traditions shape daily life and social bonds.

The province is accessible through Osvaldo Virgil Airport, which offers regular flight services. The local economy relies on agriculture, livestock farming, and coastal salt production, which shape employment and daily activities in the region.

An important manifesto for Cuban independence was signed in 1895 at a residence in this province by key political figures. This historical document connects the region to a pivotal moment in Caribbean history.
