Monte Cristi Province, Administrative province in northwestern Dominican Republic
Monte Cristi Province spans 1,924 square kilometers along the north coast, featuring flat plains, hills, and the largest river in the Dominican Republic, Yaque del Norte.
Spanish authorities established Monte Cristi in 1506 through Nicolas de Ovando, followed by settler families from the Canary Islands arriving in 1533 to develop the region.
The province celebrates San Fernando festivities each May 30th with religious ceremonies, sports competitions, traditional dances, and the regional Carnival of the Bulls.
The Osvaldo Virgil Airport serves the province with regular flights, while the agricultural sector focuses on fruit cultivation, livestock farming, and coastal salt production.
The Manifesto of Montecristi, signed in 1895 by Maximo Gomez and Jose Marti at the Gomez residence, marked a crucial step toward Cuban independence.
