Harbour Island, Island district in The Bahamas
Harbour Island lies off the northeast coast of Eleuthera and stretches 4 kilometers with pink sand beaches running along its eastern shore. The island features flat terrain with densely built areas in the north, while moving south reveals increasingly undeveloped sections.
Dunmore Town was named after Governor John Murray, who maintained a summer residence there from 1786 to 1798. This early link to British colonial rule shaped the island's development as a settled community.
Local residents call their island Briland and live in colonial-era homes with colorful wooden fronts arranged along orderly streets.
Visitors reach the island via North Eleuthera Airport followed by a five-minute water taxi ride to arrive. The best time for swimming and beach exploration is during the drier months from November through April.
The eastern beach displays a natural pink hue caused by microscopic foraminifera with reddish shells mixing into the sand. This phenomenon makes the shores one of the rare naturally colored beaches in the region.
