Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve, Botanical garden in Governor's Harbour, Bahamas.
Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve is a botanical garden on Eleuthera island covering 30 acres with wooden boardwalks and natural trails connecting different zones. Each area displays distinct ecosystems showing the variety of native Bahamian plant species.
The garden was established in 2009 as the first national park on Eleuthera island. Shelby White created it as a memorial to her late husband Leon Levy.
The preserve shows how local people have used native plants for healing and daily life over generations. Walking through it reveals the deep connection between the island's nature and its communities.
Early morning visits work best when temperatures are cooler and the plants look fresh. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trails pass through varied terrain and humid zones.
In 2019 it became the first botanically accredited garden in the Bahamas by an international conservation organization. This recognition set a standard for botanical gardens across the Caribbean region.
