Ward Lake, lake in Manatee County, Florida, United States
Ward Lake is a large reservoir in Manatee County, Florida, created to supply fresh water to the city of Bradenton. The Braden River flows into the lake from the north and forms its main water source, while the lake's level remains steady throughout the year.
The reservoir was created in 1936 when the Braden River was dammed to supply water to Bradenton. A major expansion in 1985 doubled its capacity and transformed it into the larger water system that serves the region today.
The lake sits in flat terrain and is not designed for recreation like swimming or boating. The shoreline is quiet and undeveloped, making it easy to observe birds and wildlife that live in the area.
Since 1987, more than 37,000 water samples have been collected from the lake to monitor quality and track changes over time. This extensive monitoring program reveals patterns that help scientists understand how the ecosystem functions and stays healthy.
