Tampa International Airport, International airport in Tampa, United States.
Tampa International Airport is an international airport in the Tampa metropolitan area of Florida. The facility connects a central terminal building with four separate satellite structures through automated tram systems.
The facility opened in 1952 as Drew Field Municipal Airport serving the Tampa region. In 1971, the current layout with satellite halls and automated connectors replaced the earlier structure.
Visitors encounter a tall flamingo sculpture in the main hall, which has become a recognizable landmark for travelers passing through. The building includes quiet seating areas near natural light, where people often wait between connections or before boarding.
Travelers should allow extra time for security screening and check which satellite building their gate is located in beforehand. Moving between the main building and departure gates requires using automated trams that run every few minutes.
The terminal structure was the first of its kind worldwide in 1971 to use fully automated connector trams between separate buildings. This layout separated arriving and departing passengers physically from each other.
