The 7,700-acre Alafia River State Park features numerous lakes, forests, and trails across a former phosphate mining area southeast of Tampa.
The land transformed from a phosphate mining site operated by American Cyanamid until 1996 when Cytec Industries donated it to Florida for public recreation.
Local cycling groups maintain the extensive network of trails and organize regular mountain biking skills clinics for riders of all experience levels.
The park entrance at 14326 South County Road 39 in Lithia remains open daily from 8 AM until sundown, with a vehicle entry fee of $5.
The former mining operations created extreme elevation changes in the terrain, making it different from the typically flat Florida landscape.
