Alafia River State Park

Alafia River State Park is a 7,700-acre nature reserve in central Florida featuring lakes, forests, and an extensive network of trails. The park spans over a former phosphate mining area that offers varied terrain and diverse landscapes throughout its grounds.

The site operated as a phosphate mining area under American Cyanamid until 1996, when Cytec Industries donated the land to Florida authorities. This donation transformed the former industrial site into a public recreation area.

The mountain biking community gathers here regularly to ride and share techniques with fellow cyclists. The park has become a hub where riders of different skill levels connect through their shared passion for off-road cycling.

The park is open daily from 8 AM until sunset with a vehicle entry fee of $5 at the South County Road 39 entrance near Lithia. Visitors should plan for the terrain's elevation changes, which differ from typical flat Florida landscapes and require appropriate footwear and conditioning.

The former mining operations created dramatic elevation changes across the landscape, setting it apart from Florida's typically flat terrain. These unexpected hills make exploration particularly rewarding for visitors accustomed to the state's usual flatness.
