Port Charlotte, Residential community in Charlotte County, Florida
Port Charlotte is a residential settlement in Charlotte County on Florida's Gulf Coast with more than one hundred miles of canals leading toward Charlotte Harbor. Homes line these waterways, which were originally dug to provide boat access and now define the layout of the community.
General Development Corporation began building this coastal settlement in the 1950s during a period of intense development along western Florida. The company dug hundreds of canals and sold lots on a large scale to buyers from northern states.
Residents participate in water activities through numerous yacht clubs, tennis facilities, and public parks situated along the natural shoreline.
Most shops and services are located in the Murdock district, which spans several blocks and includes shopping centers and retail stores. Visitors exploring by boat will find many public ramps and docks along the canals.
Hurricane Charley hit the area in 2004 with strong winds that tore off roofs and knocked down power lines. Eighteen years later, Hurricane Ian passed through the same streets and damaged many homes again.
