Florida Territory, U.S. territory in southeastern North America, United States.

Florida Territory was a territory of the United States in southeastern North America, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean and covering wide wetlands, subtropical forests, and long coastal stretches. The area encompassed the entire peninsula and panhandle of present-day Florida as well as portions of the adjacent Gulf Coast.

The United States acquired the region from Spain through the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819 and organized it as a territory under American administration in 1822. The area entered the Union as the 27th state in 1845 after its population grew and a constitution was adopted.

Settlement brought Spanish place names that remain visible today in many towns and geographic features, reflecting the region's layered heritage. Different communities developed distinct ways of living shaped by the subtropical climate and the need to adapt to flooding and hurricanes.

The capital relocated from St. Augustine to Tallahassee in 1824 to provide a more central location for administrative tasks and improve access from all parts of the territory. Travel within the area relied mainly on waterways and a few overland routes, as the terrain was often swampy and difficult to cross.

The Seminole Wars marked the territorial period with prolonged conflicts over land and relocation that spanned more than two decades. Many place names in modern Florida derive from the Seminole language and recall the original inhabitants of the region.
