Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Crystal River, Florida
Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in Kings Bay composed of roughly 80 acres of land and over 20 islands. The site is shaped by numerous natural springs that continuously discharge fresh water into the bay.
The refuge was established in 1983 to protect the endangered manatee from hunting and injury. This founding marked a turning point in the conservation of this species in Florida.
The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex includes educational exhibits and interactive displays that teach visitors about local marine ecosystems.
The best way to explore the area is by boat or kayak, as most sections are accessible only from the water. Visitors should start early in the day to find the calmest conditions and clearest views.
The springs in Kings Bay flow with a remarkable volume of fresh water into the system, making this one of the richest freshwater areas in the state. This continuous discharge sustains the entire local ecosystem and creates a rare habitat.
