Valdosta State University, Public university in Valdosta, Georgia, US
Valdosta State University is a public higher education institution in southern Georgia with a wide campus marked by several buildings in Spanish Mission style. The grounds combine older architecture with newer facilities and hold lecture halls, administrative offices, libraries and residence halls serving more than ten thousand enrolled students.
The institution opened in 1906 as a state teacher training college and became a women's college from 1922. It gained full university status in the early nineties and at the same time began admitting men again.
Students participate in more than 200 organizations, accessing campus media through The Spectator newspaper and WVVS-FM radio station.
The campus lies west of downtown and is easily reached from several main roads, with designated parking areas around the central buildings. Visitors can walk along public paths and spend time on the outdoor grounds, while events and performances are sometimes open to guests.
The library was named after Gertrude Gilmer Odum and holds several floors with large reading rooms and collections on regional topics. Particularly noticeable are the high ceilings and broad windows in the main area, which bring daylight into the work spaces.
