Shellman Historic District

Shellman Historic District is a downtown area with more than 160 buildings and structures scattered across 200 acres, bounded by streets like Dean, Church, Mary Lou, and Pine. The area contains homes, shops, churches, a railroad depot, and a cemetery that together show how a complete town was organized.

The district developed from the late 1800s through the early 1900s as the local economy and population grew. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 to preserve this period of growth and change.

The structures here reflect what people valued in their homes and public buildings across different periods. Walking through, you see how residents chose styles like Classical Revival, Victorian, and Craftsman designs to express their vision of a well-built community.

The district is best explored on foot, with buildings visible and accessible along the various streets. Plan time to wander and notice the different architectural styles and public spaces like churches and the cemetery.

The town was originally called Ward but changed its name to honor Major R. F. Shellman, who helped build a local institute and supported the town's growth. This naming story remains part of what gives the place its identity today.
