Shellman Historic District

The Shellman Historic District encompasses 163 buildings and one contributing site across 200 acres within Randolph County, bordered by Dean, Church, Mary Lou, Ward, Pecan, and Pine Streets.

The district gained its National Register of Historic Places designation in 1985, reflecting the architectural evolution and community development patterns from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The collection of Classical Revival, Late Victorian, and Bungalow/Craftsman structures within the district demonstrates the architectural preferences and building techniques of different historical periods.

The district includes residential properties, commercial buildings, churches, a railroad depot, and the city cemetery, making it accessible for architectural research and historical documentation.

Originally named Ward, the town changed its name to Shellman in honor of Major R. F. Shellman, who contributed to the construction of the Shellman Institute and promoted local development.
