Walter F. George Lake

Walter F. George Lake is a large reservoir created on the Chattahoochee River that stretches between Georgia and Alabama. The water body covers a significant area with an extensive shoreline offering multiple spots for access and recreation.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the dam in 1957 to manage flood control and generate electricity for the area. This project fundamentally altered the river system and created the large water body that exists today.

The shoreline communities along the water reflect how people have adapted their lives to living next to this large reservoir, using it for fishing, recreation, and daily activities that have shaped the region for generations.

The same body of water holds two official names depending on which state you are in: Walter F. George Lake in Georgia and Lake Eufaula in Alabama. This naming split came about following a 1963 state decision and reflects how the state boundary divides the identity of the reservoir.
