Florence Marina State Park, State park near Lake Walter F. George, Omaha, United States.
Florence Marina State Park is a state park on the northern shore of Lake Walter F. George, a large reservoir in southwestern Georgia. It offers a marina with deep-water docking, a boat launch, camping spots, and cottages along the waterfront.
The town of Florence was founded in 1837 on this land and existed until 1995, when rising waters from the reservoir eventually swallowed what remained of it. Before that, a covered bridge once connected Georgia and Alabama across the river at this spot, but floods destroyed it.
The Kirbo Interpretive Center displays objects left by the area's original inhabitants alongside exhibits about local wildlife, offering visitors insight into the region's past.
Most of the facilities here are built around the water, so the visit works best if you plan to boat, fish, or swim in the lake. If you want to stay overnight, you can choose between camping spots and cottages, but booking ahead is a good idea, especially in warmer months.
The Kirbo Interpretive Center inside the park displays objects left by the area's earliest inhabitants alongside exhibits about local wildlife, which is not something you would expect to find in a marina-focused park. It is one of the few centers of this kind inside a Georgia state park.
