Aflac Building, Corporate headquarters in Columbus, Georgia, US

The Aflac Building is the corporate headquarters for the Aflac insurance company in Columbus and rises 19 stories to a height of approximately 278 feet (85 meters). The structure functions as a modern office complex designed to house the company's operations and administrative functions in a single location.

Construction of the Aflac Building was ordered in late November 1974, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 4, 1975. The tower was completed and occupied on December 19, 1975, part of a modernization push for downtown Columbus that also produced the Columbus Consolidated Government Center a year earlier. Since 1981 the building has carried a Christmas-tree-shaped lighting display each Christmas.

The building reflects how large corporations shape smaller cities beyond major metro areas and establish strong local presence. It has defined Columbus's skyline for decades and represents the city's importance in the national insurance industry.

The tower stands about one mile (1.6 km) east of downtown Columbus, a short drive from the city center. It is a working corporate headquarters, so visitors see the exterior and lobby areas only; interior access needs prior arrangement with Aflac. The Christmas-tree light display is best viewed after dark during the holiday season.

For decades, this was the tallest building in Georgia outside Atlanta, Savannah, and Augusta, making it a symbol of Columbus's economic independence from the state's larger metros. This distinction helped put the city on the map beyond its region.
