National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus

National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus, Civil War naval history museum in Columbus, Georgia, US

The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus is housed in a large facility containing warships, exhibits, and artifacts from Union and Confederate naval forces. The collections include cannons, ship models, and equipment from the naval conflict.

The museum was established to preserve the naval history of the Civil War, and later acquired a major warship called the CSS Jackson, which was recovered from a river. This vessel is one of the few surviving Confederate combat ships.

The museum displays naval flags, weapons, and personal items from sailors on both sides, showing what daily life was like aboard the ships. These objects help visitors understand how different the experiences were for those serving at sea.

Visitors should know that the museum has different opening hours on different days, so it is worth checking ahead of your visit. The location is easy to find, and you should plan enough time to explore the site properly.

The museum holds the largest collection of Brooke rifled naval cannons from Confederate foundries, and displays the biggest surviving example of this rare artillery type. Such cannons are rarely found outside this collection.
