It replaced the Municipal Auditorium of 1955 and serves as the city's main concert venue, hosting the Columbus Lions indoor football team and the Columbus River Dragons ice hockey team.

The Columbus Civic Center opened in 1996, built alongside a softball complex to complete South Commons, an area that already held a baseball and football stadium and a skateboard park. It replaced the Municipal Auditorium, constructed in 1955. The arena seats 10,000 and has hosted the Columbus Cottonmouths from 1996 to 2017 and the Riverdragons basketball team from 2001 to 2005.
