Atlanta Motor Speedway, NASCAR racing track in Hampton, Georgia, US
Atlanta Motor Speedway is a motorsport circuit in Hampton, Georgia, where NASCAR competitions take place throughout the season. The track measures roughly 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) in length and its turns rise more than 20 degrees, allowing vehicles to achieve high speeds during events.
The facility opened in July 1960 and held its first major race just weeks after the gates swung open. Over the decades the track surface was repaved several times and the banking angles were changed to allow faster runs and closer finishes.
The name comes from the state in which the track sits and its shape resembles a box where one longer straight side does not follow the typical ovals of most circuits. Motorsport fans arrive from across North America to park their own trailers or pitch tents right beside this facility.
Visitors should wear comfortable shoes because the grounds and grandstands are spread out and require considerable walking. On race days it helps to arrive early to find parking near preferred seating areas and allow time for security checks.
The grandstands along the front straight provide a direct view of the spot where vehicles shoot out of the steep turns and reach their highest speed. Many spectators prefer these seats because they can follow both the arrival and the start of laps without interruption.
