Rockmart, city in Polk County, Georgia, United States of America
Rockmart is a small city in Polk County, in the northwestern part of Georgia, sitting among rolling hills and farmland. The downtown area is made up of old brick buildings arranged along a simple grid of streets, with a scale that makes it easy to take in on foot.
The city was founded in 1872, when the arrival of the railway opened the area to trade and industry. From the 1880s onward, slate quarries and brickworks brought economic activity that shaped the town's layout and its built fabric.
The city's name, originally written as two words, referred to a trading post where stones and minerals were bought and sold. Today, walking through downtown, you can still see the old brick storefronts that give the center its working-town character.
Rockmart sits in the northwestern corner of Georgia, reachable by road from nearby towns in the region. The downtown area is compact enough to explore on foot, and the flat streets make it straightforward to move between the old buildings at your own pace.
Bricks made from local clay were shipped as far as London, and some are said to have washed up on beaches in Florida over time. A few of these bricks can still be spotted in the older buildings that line the downtown streets.
