Etowah Indian Mounds is an archaeological site in Bartow County featuring raised earth platforms and remnants of prehistoric settlements along the river. The complex consists of several man-made mounds arranged around a central open plaza.
People of the Mississippian culture built this settlement between the 11th and 16th centuries, developing advanced construction techniques. The community relied on growing corn and other crops until the site was eventually abandoned.
The name Etowah comes from the Cherokee language and means „dead tree,
The walking trail passes the main mounds and offers information panels explaining each structure. A museum building near the entrance displays finds from excavations and explains the daily life of former inhabitants.
The mounds served as foundations for temples and houses of the elite, while the rest of the population lived in simple structures at ground level. Researchers estimate that several thousand people lived together in this community at times.
