Allatoona Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Bartow County, US.
Allatoona Dam is a concrete structure that spans 281 meters across the Etowah River and creates a large reservoir for power generation and water management. The facility produces electricity through flowing water and supplies drinking water to three counties at the same time.
Construction of the dam started in 1946 as a response to flooding dangers set by national flood control laws. The project required moving railroad lines and resulted in flooding the former town of Etowah.
The dam transformed the region when it was completed and created Lake Allatoona, a place where people gather for outdoor activities and relaxation. Today visitors find walking trails, fishing spots, and picnic areas that have become central to how the community uses this space.
The dam area is open to the public with designated spots for fishing, hiking, and boating on the lake. Visitors should know that water levels change greatly depending on the season and recent weather.
During the severe drought in the 1980s, water levels dropped so far that old roads, tree stumps, and house foundations from the former town of Etowah became visible. These remains show what life was like here before the dam was built.
