Red Top Mountain State Park, State park on Lake Allatoona in Bartow County, Georgia
Red Top Mountain State Park is a state park on the shore of Lake Allatoona in Bartow County, Georgia. It has wooded hiking trails, a sandy beach, boat ramps, picnic areas, tent and RV sites, and cottages near the water.
The area was once an active iron ore mining zone, which gave the mountain its name, since the soil's red color comes from its high iron content. In the 20th century, the construction of Allatoona Dam created the lake, and the park was later established around its shores.
The park is north of Atlanta and easy to reach from I-75. A short road leads across the lake to the entrance, and parking is available close to most areas of the park.
One of the hiking trails passes a recreated 1860s farmstead that shows what life in the area looked like before the dam was built and the valley flooded. From time to time, iron pouring demonstrations are held near the Vaughn Cabin, connecting visitors to the area's old mining past.
