Conyers, County seat in Atlanta metropolitan area, United States.
Conyers is a city in Rockdale County, located about 24 miles east of Atlanta. The settlement extends along the historic Georgia Railroad tracks, where residential neighborhoods and shops line up beside each other.
In the early 1800s a railroad halt emerged at this spot. The settlement grew around this station as travelers and merchants used it as a stopover point.
The city takes its name from the physician who bought land parcels for the railway construction. Today the streets still show traces of this railroad era, while daily life centers on the old depot.
The former depot now houses a visitor center that provides maps and tips about restaurants and lodging. Most facilities lie along the main streets that run parallel to the tracks.
A Trappist abbey was founded in the area in 1944. Protestant residents helped the Catholic monks establish the religious community.
