Smyrna, Municipality in Cobb County, Georgia, United States
Smyrna is a municipality in Cobb County within the Atlanta metropolitan area, covering roughly 15 square miles (39 square kilometers) of residential streets and retail zones. The community sits northwest of downtown Atlanta and combines suburban neighborhoods with local shopping centers and several public green spaces.
The community began in 1832 as a small settlement and was officially incorporated in 1872. On July 4, 1864, two clashes during the Civil War took place here, briefly placing the town at the center of military movements.
The population of 55,663 residents represents a diverse mix of backgrounds, with the city offering regular festivals, markets, and community gatherings throughout the year.
The town is well connected by several highways and offers public transit links toward Atlanta. Parks and shopping options are spread throughout the area and can be reached by car or on foot depending on the neighborhood.
An aircraft factory opened in 1951 and fundamentally changed the town over two decades, with the population growing from roughly 2000 to nearly 20000. Production of military planes brought new jobs and attracted families from the region.
