Duluth is a city in Gwinnett County roughly 35 kilometers northeast of Atlanta in Georgia. The place spreads across an area of about 27 square kilometers with gentle hills and residential neighborhoods grouped around a historic core lined with shops and restaurants.
The settlement was originally called Howell's Crossing and grew along a road junction. In 1871, the railroad arrived in the region and gave the place its current name, encouraging trade and growth.
The annual Fall Festival takes place every September on the town green, drawing residents and visitors together. The same green hosts many other events throughout the year, including art displays in spring and musical evenings during the Fridays-N-Duluth series.
Most facilities lie along main roads in the center and in the surrounding residential neighborhoods. Several parks offer green spaces and walking paths that can be used at different times of the day.
In 1922, the community elected Alice Harrell Strickland as mayor and wrote a chapter in Georgia history. That moment marked an early step in the political life of women in this part of the southern states.
