Built between 1795 and 1798 when Louisville served as Georgia's capital, the Old Market received National Register of Historic Places recognition in February 1978.
The structure stands at the intersection of Broad Street and Mulberry Street, representing early commercial activities and social exchanges in Louisville's community.
The market building contains four heavy wooden support timbers that underwent reinforcement after renovations introduced a new roof and cement floor in the 1950s.
In 2020, the Louisville city council voted four to one for the removal of the Old Market following a petition that gathered 4,000 signatures.
