Aiken Winter Colony Historic District I

Aiken Winter Colony Historic District is a historic area in Aiken, South Carolina, encompassing multiple properties and buildings from different decades. The district contains residences, outbuildings, golf facilities, school buildings, and horse-related structures spread across the grounds.

In the late 1800s, wealthy families from the North came here to escape harsh winters and build winter homes. This seasonal community grew and developed over several decades as a retreat for affluent people.

The houses display Colonial Revival and Classical architectural elements that reflect how wealthy families wanted to live in the early 1900s. Walking through the district, you notice carefully maintained gardens and wide driveways that show the elegance of that era.

A polo field from 1882 and a golf course from 1892 show what leisure activities the wealthy residents valued. These sports facilities remain in place today and remind visitors of the passion for horses and golf from that era.
