Francis Marion University, Public university in Florence, South Carolina
Francis Marion University is a public university in Florence that spreads across about 400 acres of land with modern academic and residential buildings. The campus also includes natural forest areas and specialized facilities such as laboratories, research centers, and a two-story observatory.
The university was founded in 1957 as a branch of the University of South Carolina housed in the Florence County Library before gaining independence in 1970. This transition marked the beginning of its growth as a separate institution serving the region.
The campus preserves slave quarters from the Gregg Plantation, listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. These structures allow visitors to encounter and reflect on the difficult past of the region firsthand.
The campus is well developed with facilities for laboratories, research, and teaching, so visitors should allow time to explore the different areas. The two-story observatory is accessible to most visitors and offers good vantage points along with expert explanations about astronomy.
The university runs an NCAA Division I golf program despite being otherwise a Division II institution and competes in the Southland Conference. This makes it an unusual outlier in the college athletics system.
