Orangeburg is a county seat in South Carolina located 37 miles (60 kilometers) southeast of Columbia near the North Edisto River. The settlement spreads across a plateau of sandy soil and pine forests, crossed by several waterways and parks.
A trading post appeared here in 1704 for exchange with indigenous communities, from which a European settlement later developed. The name honors William IV, Prince of Orange, and reflects the political leanings of early colonists.
