South Carolina State University is a public higher education institution in Orangeburg that serves as a historically Black land-grant campus. The grounds include classroom buildings, residence halls, administrative offices, and research facilities for applied agriculture and engineering spread over several dozen hectares.
The university opened in 1896 as Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina and grew from a teacher training school into a comprehensive research institution. The current name was adopted in 1992 after decades of expanding academic programs and adding graduate offerings.
The university maintains strong connections to African American heritage through academic programs, student organizations, and community engagement initiatives.
