Introduced in 1873, the cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway.

It has become a significant tourist attraction and is one of the most famous symbols of the city of San Francisco.

There are three routes in operation that primarily serve major tourist destinations.

In 1964, it was declared as the first moving National Historic Landmark.
