Established in 1854, it survived the great earthquake of 1906.
Alcatraz Island is best known for the legendary prison that once housed notorious criminals.
The lighthouse is a contributing property to the Alcatraz Island National Historic Landmark.
Unlike any typical lighthouse, the Alcatraz Island Light stands on an island with a rich penitentiary history.
