Aptos is a suburban community along the coast in Santa Cruz County that spreads across several distinct sections including Aptos Village, Seacliff, Rio del Mar, and Seascape. These different parts together form one large residential area with varied neighborhoods.
Rafael Castro received the large Rancho Aptos land grant from the Mexican government in 1833, setting the stage for future settlement. This land gift marked the beginning of how the area developed into what it is today.
The name Aptos comes from the Ohlone language, reflecting the indigenous people who lived along this coast long before modern development. Walking through the different neighborhoods today, you can sense the layers of this long settlement history.
