Golden Bough Playhouse, Theatre in Carmel-by-the-Sea, United States.
Golden Bough Playhouse is a two-venue theater complex on Monte Verde Street in Carmel. The main auditorium seats about 290 people, while the smaller Circle Theatre below holds around 120 seats.
Edward G. Kuster built the original theater in 1924 on Ocean Avenue, but it was destroyed by fire. The venue relocated to its current location in 1952 and has operated there since.
Pacific Repertory Theatre has operated this venue since 1994, bringing professional plays and productions to local audiences and visitors. The space serves as a gathering place for the community to experience live theater throughout the year.
Major renovations between 2011 and 2024 added modern safety systems and new projection technology to both venues. Allow extra time to navigate the space, as the second theater is accessible via internal stairs.
The name draws from Roman mythology, where a golden bough allowed Aeneas to journey into the underworld. This classical reference echoes the journey through imaginary worlds that happens on stage.
