La Ribera Hotel, Two-story Spanish Electic sytle hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California (now the Pine Inn).
La Ribera Hotel is a hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, built in 1929 with Spanish Eclectic architecture made of concrete and wood. The two-story building features a Moorish-style tower, grass courtyard with wrought iron fencing, and offers guests simple, clean rooms with basic amenities.
The building was constructed in 1929, replacing a 1906 house designed by watercolor artist Sydney J. Yard who operated an art studio there. After facing financial difficulties during the Great Depression, it underwent several ownership changes and a major 1949 expansion before reopening as Cypress Inn in the 1980s.
The hotel's name comes from the Spanish word 'Ribera', meaning riverbank. Its Moorish-style tower and Spanish Eclectic design are visual landmarks that visitors notice when walking through the downtown area and reflect the artistic heritage of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The hotel is located at the corner of Lincoln Street and 7th Avenue in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and provides parking and Wi-Fi. Some rooms offer water views, and the grass courtyard provides a quiet spot to relax after exploring the nearby galleries, shops, and beaches.
The hotel was restored and reopened by actress Doris Day in the 1980s, who made it pet-friendly, becoming one of the first accommodations in the area to welcome animals. This distinctive feature was later featured in Architectural Digest magazine.
