Golden Era Building, historic commercial building in San Francisco, California

Welcome to San Francisco, where history and culture come together in a unique way. If you're interested in exploring the city's rich past, then the Golden Era Building is a must-see destination. Located at 732-734 Montgomery Street in the Jackson Square area of San Francisco, the Golden Era Building was built in 1852 during the California Gold Rush. Originally known as the Call Building, it has been designated as a San Francisco Designated Landmark since March 9, 1969. It is also part of the Jackson Square Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The Golden Era Building was constructed on the foundations of an 1849 structure that had been destroyed in the San Francisco Fire of 1851. The cast iron pillars on the exterior of the building are from a remodel in 1892 and were created locally by the Vulcan Iron Works. On the ground floor of the building, the space initially was occupied by Vernon Hall, which was rented out by fraternal societies and theatre troupes. The building gets its name from the 19th-century literary newspaper, The Golden Era, which occupied the second floor of the building from December 1852 until approximately 1854. Other tenants of the building included Thomas Day's gas fixtures store and John Monahan and Co., a printing company that did work for the San Francisco Railway and North Pacific Railway. The ground floor was later occupied by a crockery shop and a Chinese broom factory. The second floor was later occupied by artist studios. If you're interested in architecture or history, the Golden Era Building is a fascinating example of San Francisco's past. You can admire the cast iron pillars on the exterior of the building and imagine what life was like in the city during the Gold Rush era. The Golden Era Building is easily accessible by public transportation, with several bus and streetcar lines stopping nearby. It is also within walking distance of many other historic sites in the Jackson Square area, including the Old Ship Saloon and the Hotaling Building. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for something unique to do in San Francisco, the Golden Era Building is definitely worth a visit. Don't miss this opportunity to step back in time and experience a piece of the city's rich past.
