Manteca, Residential city in San Joaquin County, California, US.
Manteca is a residential city in San Joaquin County, California, between Modesto and Stockton. Streets run in a grid pattern through quiet residential neighborhoods with single-family homes and small gardens.
Joshua Cowell laid out the settlement from 1861 and built several houses at today's intersection of Main Street and Yosemite Street. The railroad company renamed the place accidentally in 1873 when the name Monteca was misprinted.
The annual late May memorial day draws visitors from across the region and honors soldiers with parades and ceremonies. Families and veteran groups gather at the city park for shared commemorations and conversations.
The city sits at the crossing of Interstate 5 and State Route 120, so commuters can reach nearby metropolitan regions quickly. Wide streets and parking lots make driving easy, though public transport is limited.
A railroad clerical mistake led to the current name when Monteca accidentally became Manteca. The Spanish word for lard has remained the official city name ever since.
