Ukiah is a small town in northern California and the administrative center of Mendocino County. Hills and vineyards surround the valley where the main street runs along Route 101.
The settlement grew on Pomo land, whose word Yokaya shaped the current name. In March 1876 the place was officially declared a town.
Locals gather at the Saturday farmers market downtown to buy fresh produce and regional crafts. The theater and museum host performances and exhibitions for families several times a year.
Bus lines connect the town center with surrounding communities, and a rail bus runs to larger transport hubs in the south. Pedestrians find shops and restaurants along the main street within short walking distances.
A large family operation converted its old pear orchards into grapevines and shows the agricultural shift of the area. The estate covers about 2,000 acres (800 ha) and welcomes visitors for tastings.
