Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery, Buddhist Monastery in Redwood Valley, United States
Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery is a monastery spread across about 280 acres of forested hilly terrain, organized into different functional areas. The site includes meditation halls, a library, residential quarters, and scattered living huts that house monks and practitioners.
The monastery was established in 1988 by the Sanghapala Foundation on land originally granted by followers of Chan Master Hsuan Hua. The site expanded significantly through subsequent donations to reach its present extent.
The name references a protective Buddhist deity and reflects the spiritual orientation of the place. Visitors can observe daily rituals of residents, from morning ceremonies to structured work periods that shape the rhythm of life here.
Visitors can participate in meditation retreats, attend teaching sessions, and join community events at a central reception area where meals and accommodation are arranged. Planning ahead is advisable since activities are usually scheduled in advance.
The community maintains separate living areas for male and female residents as part of its organizational structure. This arrangement affects how daily life unfolds and how different groups navigate the grounds.
