Redding is a city along the Sacramento River in northern California that serves as the administrative center of Shasta County. The settlement sits between the state capital to the south and the Oregon border to the north, surrounded by mountains and valleys of northern California.
The Central Pacific Railroad reached this area in 1872 and built a terminus here, leading to the founding of the city. About fifteen years later, the community was officially incorporated and named after the land surveyor who explored this region in the 1840s.
The Wintu indigenous people maintained numerous settlements in the Redding region before European exploration began in the 1500s.
The city serves as a starting point for visitors exploring nearby national parks and mountain regions. The street network connects different neighborhoods and leads to natural attractions in the surrounding area.
