Lloyd Center, shopping mall in Portland, Oregon, United States
Lloyd Center is a multi-level shopping mall in the Lloyd District of Portland, Oregon, with storefronts on several floors, a food court, and a central ice rink open to the public. Several parking garages and surface lots surround the building, making it one of the larger retail complexes in the city.
Ralph Lloyd first envisioned the project in the 1920s, but the Great Depression and World War II pushed the opening back to 1960. At the opening ceremony, 700 homing pigeons were released to carry news of the new mall across the region.
The center takes its name from Ralph Lloyd, a real estate developer who planned a self-contained neighborhood with shops and homes in the 1920s. The ice rink at its center continues to draw skaters of all ages and remains one of the most recognizable gathering spots in the neighborhood.
The mall is easy to reach by car, with parking available in garages directly attached to the building. For those coming without a car, a MAX Light Rail station is located nearby and connects directly to downtown Portland.
The ice rink inside was the first in the world to be built inside a shopping mall when it opened in 1960. A group of older skaters known as the Hooky Club has met there every week since that same year, making it one of the longest-running informal clubs of its kind in the country.
