Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station

The Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station is a restroom facility in Pierce County featuring stone walls up to window level with wooden frames above and cedar shingle roofing. This design creates a sturdy structure that blends into the mountain setting of Mount Rainier National Park.

Built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the National Park Service design team, it came from an era when the federal government developed infrastructure in national parks to welcome visitors. The construction reflected a commitment to making remote mountain areas accessible while maintaining harmony with nature.

The building shows how the National Park Service designed structures to fit naturally into wild mountain landscapes using materials from the area.

The facility operates during summer months from June through October when visitors come to Mount Rainier National Park. Plan your visit for late spring through early fall when the road to Tipsoo Lake is fully open and weather conditions are most predictable.

This stands as one of only two planned facilities at Tipsoo and Chinook Pass, while further development of the area never happened. It remains a remnant of a larger infrastructure vision from the era when the government invested heavily in park accessibility.
