Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station, Heritage restroom facility in Pierce County, US

The Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station is a restroom facility in Pierce County featuring stone walls up to window level with wooden frames above and cedar shingle roofing. This design creates a sturdy structure that blends into the mountain setting of Mount Rainier National Park.

Built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the National Park Service design team, it came from an era when the federal government developed infrastructure in national parks to welcome visitors. The construction reflected a commitment to making remote mountain areas accessible while maintaining harmony with nature.

The station is a public toilet built in the National Park Service Rustic style, with rough stonework to window sill level, a framed wall above and a log-framed roof covered in cedar shingles. Its design was supervised by Chief Architect Thomas Chalmers Vint and resembles the Sunrise Comfort Station in the park's central portion.

The comfort station sits near Mount Rainier National Park's northern entrance, by Tipsoo Lake and Chinook Pass, reached by the Chinook Pass highway. The building is a surviving structure of a planned Tipsoo-Chinook Pass development that never went beyond toilets and an entrance arch. Mountain weather and snow can close the pass road outside the warm months, so check road conditions before setting out.

This stands as one of only two planned facilities at Tipsoo and Chinook Pass, while further development of the area never happened. It remains a remnant of a larger infrastructure vision from the era when the government invested heavily in park accessibility.
