Sunrise Historic District, Historic district in Pierce County, US
Sunrise Historic District contains seven structures built in rustic style at about 6,400 feet elevation on Mount Rainier's northeast side. The complex includes a lodge with dining and accommodation facilities, along with support buildings.
The district was established in 1932, originally called Yakima Park, with construction of Sunrise Lodge and supporting facilities. This development was part of the National Park's expansion during that era.
The structures follow National Park Service Rustic design principles that reflect architectural patterns from the early 1900s. Visitors can see this style expressed consistently throughout the district.
Access is available during summer months when roads at this elevation are clear of snow. Plan a visit between July and September when the site is fully open for exploration.
The original complex included about 200 tourist cabins that were later sold to farmers across Eastern Washington. These cabins became housing for agricultural workers in the region.
