Belfry Theatre, Performance theater in Fernwood, Victoria, Canada

Belfry Theatre occupies the former Emmanuel Baptist Church in Fernwood, a building designed by Thomas Hooper and constructed between 1887 and 1892. The converted church houses a stage for contemporary theatre, with the chapel serving as the performance space. Two major renovations, completed in 2003 and 2017, reshaped the interior.

The Emmanuel Baptist Church of Fernwood was built between 1887 and 1892 under Rev. Peter H. McEwen, after the congregation bought the Fernwood and Gladstone plot for $550 and dedicated the Spring Ridge Chapel on February 6, 1887. The congregation moved to Saanich on April 4, 1971. In 1974 Blair Shakel rented the chapel as a theatre, and in 1975 Don Shipley founded the Springridge Cultural Centre, later the Belfry.

The theater works with local artists to present works that explore Canadian stories and contemporary issues. The stage serves the community as a space where creative dialogue and artistic exchange happen.
