Penis Satan, Guerrilla art statue in Clark Drive Plaza, Vancouver, Canada.
Penis Satan was a life-size red devil figure made of mixed materials, including a modified mannequin, with pointed ears, a thin tail, and a black band at the waist. It stood on a grey stone pedestal in Clark Drive Plaza, its right arm raised in the sign of the horns and its left hand at its waist.
The statue was erected without authorization on September 9, 2014, in Clark Drive Plaza, an abandoned concrete amphitheater on the west side of Clark Drive at Grandview Highway North. It stood on an empty pedestal that had previously displayed a three-foot-tall Christopher Columbus statue honouring Angelo Branca. City of Vancouver Public Works employees removed it after CTV Vancouver and Global BC reported on it, and several petitions asked for its return. In 2019 an anonymous artist using the pseudonym "Obsidian" claimed responsibility.
The figure makes the sign of the horns hand gesture, and its explicit content drew mixed opinions from the art community. Artnet compared it to "Korea's boner Spider-Man, Poland's peeing Lenin, and Oklahoma's Satanic courthouse monument." Ammar Mahimwalla of the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale called it "really well made as a piece," while City of Vancouver public art manager Bryan Newson called it a spontaneous prankster intervention.
The statue stood in Clark Drive Plaza, an abandoned concrete amphitheater on the west side of Clark Drive at Grandview Highway North, on a pedestal that once held a three-foot Christopher Columbus statue. It could be seen from the Expo Line of the SkyTrain, near the East Van Cross on the opposite side of the tracks. City crews removed it soon after it appeared.
In 2019, an anonymous artist using the pseudonym "Obsidian" claimed responsibility for the statue, five years after it was removed.
