Reclining Figure, Bronze sculpture in Dude Chilling Park, Vancouver, Canada
The Reclining Figure is a bronze sculpture lying on a knoll in the center of the park, depicting a stretched-out human form. The work occupies space and becomes a natural part of the park's landscape.
The original cedar wood sculpture was installed in 1991, but the material weathered over time. In 2019, it was replaced with a permanent bronze cast.
The title simply describes what you see: a human body lying down. The sculpture invites visitors to approach the knoll and view it from different angles, making the relationship between body and land something you can experience directly.
The sculpture sits on a knoll in the middle of the park and is easy to spot. Visitors can walk around the work and view it from above and below, which offers the best experience.
The bronze version came about through community fundraising by local residents. This neighborhood support made it possible to preserve the crumbling original work in permanent form.
