Fountain Chapel

Fountain Chapel is a white wooden building with Arts and Crafts architectural elements located in Strathcona on Jackson Avenue. The structure features a peaked roof and symmetrical design that reflects the key characteristics of this architectural style.

The building was constructed in 1910 as a Lutheran church and transitioned to the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1918 under Nora Hendrix's leadership. This shift marked an important change in how the space was used religiously.

The chapel served as a gathering place for Vancouver's Black community, where people came together for worship, meetings, and social events. This space held deep meaning in the city's community life.

The building is now a private residence and can be viewed from the outside as you walk through the neighborhood. It helps to explore the area during quieter times when you can appreciate the architecture without distraction.

Canada Post honored this location in 2014 with a commemorative stamp depicting it as part of Hogan's Alley's historical recognition. This recognition highlights how important the building is to the city's history and heritage.
