During World War II, the hotel stored personal belongings of Japanese American families who were sent to internment camps under Executive Order 9066.
The basement contains the last remaining Japanese bathhouse in the United States, representing early 20th century Japanese American community life in Seattle.

Through glass panels in the floorboards, visitors can view preserved artifacts from Japanese American families dating back to the 1940s.
