Danny Woo International District Community Garden, Community garden in International District, Seattle, US
Danny Woo International District Community Garden is a community garden built across four terraces with views toward Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. The site contains individual plots for gardeners, numerous fruit trees, and an outdoor kitchen area used for cooking programs.
The garden was established in 1975 after restaurant owner Danny Woo donated the land during a time when the neighborhood faced economic hardship from Kingdome and Interstate 5 construction. The project was created to give the changing community a place where they could grow food.
The plots are cultivated mostly by Asian seniors who grow traditional vegetables important to Korean and Cantonese households. These practices connect people to their roots and create a place where knowledge about farming and food is passed on.
Wear sturdy shoes when visiting since the pathways on the terraces are uneven and stairs connect the levels. The garden is most active during growing season when tools and shared spaces are in regular use.
Each July since 1975, the garden hosts a traditional roast that starts Friday evening and continues through the night. This cultural event brings the community together to celebrate their food traditions.
