Smith Tower, Neoclassical skyscraper in Pioneer Square, Seattle, US
Smith Tower is a 38-story skyscraper that rises 159 meters above Seattle with a granite base and terracotta exterior walls. The building features an observation deck on the 35th floor offering views across Elliott Bay, Mount Rainier, and downtown Seattle.
The tower was completed in 1914 and remained the tallest building west of the Mississippi River until the Space Needle was built in 1962. This shift marked a turning point in how Seattle approached its urban growth and architectural development.
The Chinese Room displays furnishings from Empress Cixi, with a hand-carved wooden chair that became part of local wedding customs. This space reflects Seattle's historical ties to Asia and the stories people carried with them to this city.
Access to the observation deck is by way of eight original brass-trimmed elevators operated by attendants who add a personal touch to your visit. Plan for a leisurely ride as these manually operated lifts move at their own pace, which is part of the building's character.
The eight elevators are entirely manual and retain their original mechanical systems from when the building opened. These working machines offer visitors a rare glimpse into early 20th-century elevator technology and craftsmanship.
